Many ISP’s block port tcp/25. If the machine had to be booted and connected to a network using an ISP blocking SMTP trafic, your email would get stuck on the machine.
I guess there are even better ways, like probing a DNS record or something..

I really doubt if a non tech-savvy thief would plug in the cable before he logged in. He would only do that when he wanted ‘to go on the internet’. Wouldn’t it be good to help him to login with a username he could choose from a menu – without password ?

My hope is that i get the N810 when it comes out. My goals is to get this to work on that:) It has GPS too…that would be a cool feature to add to the script.

Hi Sébastien,
Nice script, thanks! I took it and wrote my own version of it. You can find it here: http://www.linuxontdekt.be/linux-anti-diefstal/
This one is to save the external IP, internal IP and a picture from the webcam.
It is in dutch, but the code … is code
Greetings,
Kris

Hi Kris, this is awesome !
I didn’t have a webcam back then,
I’ll need to give it a try someday

Hi Sébastien,
I’ve made a web-service of it. You can visit at http://www.linux-anti-theft.net
At this moment, the website is available in dutch and english. If you would like to translate it into french, feel free
Greetings,
Kris

Great, unfortunately I don’t have much time currently to get involved in any project..
Good luck with the project !

Hello,
in fact I have a similar anti-theft (not too sophisticated, and not published – a bit of security by obscurity), it is a script which sends me an e-mail with all the interesting info every time the machine is started. The downside is that I have to clean my inbox periodically..
Even if the thief is tech-savvy, you can always hide it inside the init scripts, for example /etc/init.d/network
