I had some similar issues when controlling sound from the "master" switch in the sound preferences.

Try setting master to 90 % and use the "front" switch instead.

The mute key is assigned the keycode 0xa0.

Under Gnome you must go in System > Preferences > Shortcuts and assign mute to the mute key.
I guess you get something similar in KDE.

About the fan always running, this is indeed an issue. I've only booted Vista once and didn't really check if the laptop was quieter. I've been trying to figure out how I could control fans using i8kfan but it's not really working thus far (the fan just obey my orders for half a second, apparently something is controlling the fan at the hardware level and is taking over my changes)

Just today I found on some blog that Dell had published Ubuntu 7.10 ISO specifically designed for our beloved XPS : http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10#Dell_OS_Reinstallation_7.10_DVD_ISO

It may be worth checking out

I also own the XPS M1330 and have installed Kubuntu on it. One thing doesn't not work out of the box: the Mute-Key.

Another thing is annoying if you have the nVidia card built in: under Windows the card has a power saving function. If no 3D is used the card will use less power and so the fan doesn't run. I did not find a solution for Linux, yet.
