Unlocking the “Belgacom Wireless/VoIP/ADSL” Router aka Philips SNV6520/18

THE BORING PART :
For the impatients out there, just skip to “Mandatory warnings”.
A while back, Belgacom, the major ISP in Belgium used to sell the router mentionned above along with their “triple-play” offer.
My dad just got a DSL connection and I got him that model on eBay. Not that I wanted that particular model or anything, I needed a wireless DSL router quick and for a reasonable price.
I figured I could set up VoIP so my dad could call me on my Asterisk SIP PBX at home using his brand new DSL connection, using an actual phone (the unit comes with two FXS ports which you can plug two analog phones in).
The thing is.. Belgacom locked the router with a proprietary firmware which restricts VoIP to their SIP servers only.
(if you specify sip.example.org as server, it will actually try to register on voip.belgacom.be)
This howto explains how to unlock the unit and not only get unlocked VoIP but also new features (like embedded DynDNS client) .
MANDATORY WARNINGS :
You must understand that the following will void your warranty.
If you install the unlocked firmware, you’ll not be able to come back to Belgacom firmware.
I don’t have Belgacom TV, so I can’t tell if the new firmware works with it.
If the upgrade fails for some reason, you’ll probably end up with a paperweight, a quite original one I must say.
In case of power outage during the upgrade, the unit will probably get bricked.
DO NOT HOLD ME ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANY BRICKED ROUTER. I’M NOT PUTTING A GUN ON YOUR FOREHEAD TELLING YOU TO UPGRADE YOUR ROUTER. WHAT YOU ARE DOING, YOU’RE DOING IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THE PROCESS, JUST DON’T DO IT.
THE HOWTO :
1. Download
Grab the following file : http://www.wains.be/pub/SNV6520unlocking.zip
Important : The package above comes with firmware 2.09.
Here's the link to the latest firmware (version 2.15) which fixes known wireless issues (which my dad had) : http://www.wains.be/pub/SNV6520-FW2_15.zip.
I've upgraded from v2.09 to v2.15 without issue.
It has been reported in the comments that jumping directly to 2.15 was causing problems.
I recommend you upgrade to 2.09 and then to 2.15 to avoid troubles, so just proceed with 2.09 and then repeat the steps from step 5 for version 2.15.
2. Unzip the file
Untip SNV6520unlocking.zip, it contains two files :
- the boot loader : iad-boot_v0.69d.0
- the firmware : FW_7908VoWBRA_v2.09.bin
Just make sure you write down all your settings before starting, as the unit will be reset to factory settings.
3. Enable the “recovery” mode of your unit
Read and make sure your understand before proceeding :
1. Turn off the unit
2. Press the reset button located on the back while turning the unit on
3. Keep the button pressed for 2 seconds after power on
4. Release and then immediately press the reset button 3 times again (short press are fine)
5. WLAN and DSL LEDs should blink, this means the router is in recovery mode.
4. Upgrade the boot loader
Make sure your computer has an IP in the 192.168.2.0/24 range.
Go to http://192.168.2.1
Upgrade target : select boot loader
Select iad-boot_v0.69d.0 and upgrade
When done, click on reboot then reset
It should take a minute or so.
5. Upgrade the firmware
When done, go back to http://192.168.2.1, you should see that you’re now running v0.69 (upper right corner of the screen)
Upgrade target : select runtime code
Select FW_7908VoWBRA_v2.09.bin (or SMC7908VoWBRA-FW2_15.bin) and upgrade
When done, click on reboot then reset.
You should be done now, your unit should be running the SMC firmware after reboot.
6. Enjoy
Go to http://192.168.2.1
Password is “smcadmin”
You can now enjoy unlocked VoIP settings, dynamic DNS and probably other niceties.
CONCLUSION :
My dad now enjoys his internet connection wirelessly, and also calls me and belgian landlines for free through my home PBX
In the comments, it is reported that Belgacom TV works after upgrade, but NOT AS NICELY AS BEFORE THE UPGRADE. You’ve been warned

Great ! I didn’t mess with the USB port so I didn’t know if it could be of any use. Unlocked, this box is really awesome.
Greetings from Bergen
Daniel
Hi Sébastien…did you know if this firmware works in other Philips-Belgacom routers, as the grey one (I think is the first Philips modem that Belgacom provided, not suitable for TV…)? Thanks!
Sébastien Wains
Sorry, I can’t tell.. All I know is I tried other firmwares before that one and the system was checking the firmware file before doing anything. I was getting an error when the firmware file was not compatible.. And I didn’t brick my unit
phew.
Daniel
Thanks anyway. I’ll try and I let you know what happened. Fingers corssed…
Pieter
Hello,
Do you know how to reset my belgacom downloadtraffic?
grts
pieter
well, with the provider belgacom you have a download limit, when you are over the limit you come in a smallband, do you know a way to reset you’re account, so you are not longer in a smallband, and you can download again
grts
Sébastien Wains
limit is on belgacom side. Unless you can hack your way to their radius or whatever system doing accounting, you’ll have to buy extra GB. Or use another login/password for the connection.
Cheers
tomaspa
A+
tomaspa

Tu as un changelog ?
Versie-overzicht Firmwares SMC 7908VoWBRA&B
===================================
VERSIES
=======
2.13 (opgave SMC)
1. Kernel DNS cache never expired: there are two DNS cache. One, A, is used for the AP of Router, the other, B, is for DNS proxy at the LAN side. Cache B (DNS proxy) has expired time mechanism, but cache A doesn’t. And the source of cache B is from cache A. So when the entries of DNS proxy expired, DNS proxy always update them, and it is no problem, but the data is from the old data of cache A. Then DNS proxy always obtains out-of-date data.
2. Fragmentation issue in ppp mode: When WAN protocol is PPPoE or PPPoA, one host at WAN side pings WAN IP of IAD with large payload, ex 1600, Modem doesn’t response.
3. QoS module may under-estimate transmission time of some packets of specific sizes. It results in an increasing delay of voice traffic when using that specific size packets to congest WAN uplink.
4. Fixed LAN DHCP server can’t release expired IP due to it stored the wrong leased time.
5. Update DDNS
2.12 (opgave SMC)
Problems fixed:
1. Update TR69 module and httpd module.
2. Update Voice module:
a. While CPE is caller, support the attribute, silenceSupp: off
- – -
-, sent from callee. It is to disable VAD.
b. Fixed FAX call issue.
3. Add CRC tag in the content of firmware to prevent invalid firmware.
4. Update DNS proxy:
a. Fixed DNS proxy doesn’t work when one VLAN profile doesn’t contain any LAN interfaces.
b. Fixed DNS proxy records incorrect IP when PC sends PTR-type DNS query due to endian issue.
5. Fixed some GUI issues.
6. Fixed firewall SPI bugs. When there are many sessions of SPI for UDP traffic due to run P2P software, SIP session may be overwritten. Then it will make CPE treat VoIP traffic as UDP flooding attack and VoIP service can’t work. It may fix ‘In progress’ issue.
2.11 (December 2006)
(Opgave SMC)
1. Fixed CLI command bugs:
a. The name of USB interface is invalid.
b. ‘system adsl_mode’ command: Add ADSL mode: ADSL2 and ADSL2+ in Annex B FW.
2. Update TR69 module.
3. Update ADSL driver and datapump code 7.0.4.0 for Annex A/B.
FW for Annex A also supports Annex M.
4. Fixed bug if there are two VC, and one is MER or PPPoA and it is
disconnect, it will make DNS and NTP function doesn’t work.
5. Fixed a potential issue at retransmission, which will cause lots of
retransmission packets then slow connection, especially at slow link
such as ADSL uplink.
6. Update firewall module.
7. Fixed bug when WAN is MER, and DHCP client, unplug and plug ADSL
line, SIP fail to register again.
8. Update UI pages and fixed some bugs.
9. Fixed bug SDP via VC2 issues.
10. Fixed bugs if user set up any VC as 1483 bridging at the last step,
CPE doesn’t provide Web remote management.
11. Can’t bind LAN1 to other VLAN group, except Default VLAN. It is
because some services of IAD don’t work while bind LAN1 to other VLAN. After
upgrading to this FW, FW will bind LAN1 to Default VLAN automatically.
2.10 (Augustus 2006)
Opgeloste problemen / nieuwe features
2. Verbeterde afhandeling van onderhandelingsprocedure bij PPPoA sessies
3. Geheugenprobleem in NAT module (SIP) opgelost
Merci
Carte Ethernet Connexion au réseau local:
Suffixe DNS propre à la connexion :
Adresse IP. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Masque de sous-réseau . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Passerelle par défaut . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Carte PPP EDPNET :
Suffixe DNS propre à la connexion :
Adresse IP. . . . . . . . . . . . : 77.109.90.181
Masque de sous-réseau . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Passerelle par défaut . . . . . . : 77.109.90.181
JPhil

Is there someone with belgacom tv who did the upgrade?
jacky
hello Sebastian
I have Belgacom TV and b-b0x2. Can this procedure be done in b-box 2 without damaging Blegacom TV?
Seb
Hi Jacky, I’ve been told that the Bbox2 allows connections to SIP providers other than Belgacom, out of the box. Can you please try and confirm this in the comments ? Thanks.
jacky
Hi Sebastian,
My phone doesn’t function with other SIP providers
I use Grandstream HandyTone-486 behind the modem.
With my previous belgacom modem (b-box) i had no problems, but since i installed the new b-box2, problems appeared. I can use internet I have still the phone signal, when I call I hear the other party but the other party doesn’t hear me. belgacom tech cupport is of course useless, I wait everyday approximately 4 hours on hold and never have anyone answer … I am very mad!
help please!
tomaspa
Hello everyone,
I have exactly the same case! I use a service provider in Spain so that my family can call a virtual number in Barcelona (Adiptel.com) and a VoIP ArtDio SPF 2000.
I have used it in India, in Barbados, in Spain and it worked perfecly. In Brussels I don’t manage to make it work and I have the same symptoms as explained in the previous message from Jacky. If it continues I think I will not renew the contract with Belgacom and use a different Internet provider from october onwards.
Cheers
tomaspa
Seb
This is odd, a colleague on Belgacom ADSL has no trouble calling through his SIP PBX.
Usually SIP providers offer an echo test number, can you guys check that ?
@ Jacky, what is the point of having an ATA behind your BBox2 (if SIP is not locked as I was told) ? Correct me if I’m wrong but the BBox2 has FXS ports (RJ11 ports) in which you can plug your analog phone in.
Pagaille
@Jacky
The one-way sound is a common problem when using SIP behind a NAT router. There are some tips to solve those problems, but they are all server-side (pbx-side) located.
I doubt your problems are due to the modem. I never had such issue with the BBOX1 or the “red phillips” belgacom modems…
Pagaille
Seb
I second Pagaille, on your kind of setup the one-way sound problem is usually the person behind the NAT or firewall not receiving sound, because the RTP range ports (rtp.conf) is not opened/allowed. You get the problem reversed, as if something was blocking outgoing RTP packets on your side.
If the echo test isn’t successful, I’d turn verbosity mode on and take a look at SIP traces.
jacky
thanjs for your comment. Where can i find this verbose to turn it on, on b-box2?
Seb
ah right.. I forgot you were not running Asterisk. Some IP phones have “advanced” logs. Maybe an option is available on the bbox, but I doubt it.
simon
I just updated my router from SMC7908VoWBRA-FW2_09.bin to SMC7908VoWBRA-FW2_15.bin and it’s working great! I find it way more stable, It had problems with wireless flow but it’s gone.
Seb
Great ! My dad reported some problems with the WiFi.. gonna upgrade to .15 too. Thanks Simon
Kevin
@Dieter
How did you configure the router to work as a print server?
When i connect my printer to the unlocked router i can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Thanks
LECHAT
Hello Seb,
Philou
Hi,
I have a BBOX 2 from Belgacom using a Linksys Ip Phone port: ethernet, this not working anymore since 2 month, can you help me ?
Kevin

As tu le même?
khaled
@Philou
Typical problem with B-box 2
To get any sip ATA working behind B-box 2 you need to remove everything from the Lan Servers part under advances
You will find that skype, MSN are adding themselves to Lan servers
to prevent those from doing that you need to disable upnp in skype and MSN settings and also from win XP
I have tried every thing from the ATA also to use stun servers, but no way up to this moment,
Any one has suggestions on this ?
Frank
Hi
I have done the firmware upgrade to 2.15. Connection to internet is fine, also the USB works for a file server. But can’t get Belgacom tv to work again. My settopbox stays at softwareupdata 3.10. Have configured the modem with two separate Vlan’s, One on 192.168.1.1, and the one for belgacom tv on 192.168.2.1.
What’s going wrong?
Frank
Pieter
guideline for use as printer
1) Install your printer driver (in my case PSC1400)
2)After that, go to printers and faxes => Add new printer
3)Select LOCAL printer
4) In next screen. Tick the box “Make a new Port” Select Standard TCP/IP
5) Then you get a wizard. First to fill in here, is the printname or adres (192.168.1.1). Port name is filled in automatically
6) Next. Select the box “aangepast” (“adapté?”)
7) Select properties. For protocol, you select LPR. For LPR properties=> Quename => LPT1
8)Ok => and next.
9)Now the trick is, to selext the generic printer (general => General/text only)
10) Once the printer is installed. Select the generic printer in priner menu => properties => advanced. Selcect the driver from the printer installed in step 1, in the scroll down.

Be carefull with step 4. The ports in the software do not match the ports on the device. Port 1 is port 4, and port 3 is port 2. It is mentionned above, but maybe not very clearly.
It actually means you have to put the UTP-cable for Belgacom TV in port 1 on the device, while port 4 in the software is configured for IDTV. In the software you can’t change port 1, which actually is port 4 on the device.
Hope i helped someone else with it.

@ Frank : so you confirm Belgacom TV works fine after upgrading as described in this post ?
Thanks
Pieter
I ‘ve been using belgacom TV for a few months now, with same properties as Frank.
It works, but I must admit less than before.
From time to time (daily) you get a squeeqing sound, on witch the screen halts. Than the only remedie is to switch the decoder on and of.
I don’t know the explanation. But I noticed that original BELGACOM TV properties on philips router, have up until 8 to 10 ATM interfaces filled in.
Since I have written down all properties before flashing, I am resttrained to the info I can find on the net.
Should anyone be running BelgacomTV with philips SNV6520, please wirte ATM properties down, and post them please.
Then I can try these out, an let you know if it works better.

I do confirm that Belgacom TV works with the new firmware upgrade. Yesterday I had some disturbance, twice. After turning the decoder off and on (not powering off), everything worked again. Even pausing the programm worked fine. Haven’t tried recording yet. I have the same disturbance as mentionned by Pieter.
I have noticed that the original Belgacom firmware works with about 12 ATM interfaces. The new SMC firmware supports only 8 interfaces. I have only 5 activated, as described above. Me too, i would like to have detailed settings for the other ATM interfaces.

Some more ATM properties, as they are filled in till the eight slot on a BBOX.
Don’t know whether belgacomTV works better with it on the SMC, since I am actually viewing with the BBox know.
Hope it helps.. Keep me in thouch

I think it has something to do with the Mac Encapsulated Routing, but i’m not sure. I can’t set the mac encaptutated routing in the SMC.
I wonder if it’s possible to add ATM PVC’s to the SMC. The hardware can support it, but does the new software? I hope someone, with more hardware experience and knowledge then me, can find a solution.

Hi
I used the same settings as frank and pieter (atm1-atm8) and also had the disruptions
I just changed atm8 to the settings of atm11 in the original and the disruptions are gone
I messed with a lot of settings so if anyone can confirm if this is the only setting you have to change
hope this helps for the rest of you

Thank you very much for the tutorial, I unlocked one of these boxes and it works great in Canada !
Seb
Toro, that’s great news, glad it works on devices sold outside Belgium.
Can you tell us how your device is branded ?
In Belgium the unit is sold as a Philips SNV6520 but obviously it’s an SMC device with the Philips logo on it..
toro
It’s actually a Philips SNV6520 bought in Belgium. When used with a DSL service in Canada with the original firmware, the DSL connection wasn’t stable. Also with the SMC firmware 1.09 that I found elsewhere it had the same issue. After flashing it with firmware 2.15 using the method you posted, everything works great and all the functions of the device are stable.
Thanks again !
Frank
Well, I’ve changed ATM-8 to the MAC encapsulated settings, but disruptions keep appearing. I even rebooted the device.
@Geert: Can you confirm you don’t have any disruptions any more? If so, can you share your settings with us? It might be slightly different from mine, or ours. Would like to get rid of them.

Raph
Hi! Thanks for this interesting blog. On the beginning of the topic you show a flat red philips modem. Is it really the same as my big white bbox1 ? Thanks a lot!
Sébastien Wains
Hi Raph,
This post is talking about the Philips “orange” one, I couldn’t find any other picture at that time
This is the box :

Merci Belgacom..

I had a question for you guys.
My dad’s router (the SNV6520 I’m talking about in this post) seems to indefinitely store DNS requests in cache.
My Asterisk PBX is hosted at home behind a residential dynamic IP.
External phones reach my PBX through a domain at DynDNS.
If my IP changes, the phone connected to the router will never reconnect to the PBX, its status will be “in progress” but it actually tries to reconnect to the old IP. I can confirm this by using the ping utility. If I try to ping my DDNS domain, it’s actually pinging my old IP while the TTL for my DDNS domain is only 60 seconds.
I can’t find anything in the interface closely related to DNS cache, TTL or whatever. Any idea ?
Thanks
Vincent
Hi guys,
I just tried this method (http://www.ehnberg.net/johan/files/docs/philips_snv6520_firmware.html) and now the router doesnt work anymore. I think I’ve fully flashed the firmware, (I’m not sure because I had a connection lost) and now if I turn it on, only the power LED turns on. All the other LED’s are dead (so no WiFi signal too). I think I kinda bricked it, but I was hoping if you guys could tell me if there is some kind of recovery mode or that I can somehow try to flash it again with the right firmware…
Thanks a lot guys!

Bonjour Sébastien:
First of all, thank you for your helpful post about the “Belgacom” Philips snv6520 (a.k.a. SMC7098).
Indeed, the firmware update gives a second life to my router. In this sense, I’d like to share my experience with this wonderful device. Here’s my story:
I moved from Belgacom to VOO (yep, I love bandwidth), so the Philips is out of the equation w.r.t. the VOO modem.
As I didn want to discard the Philips, after updating the Philips firmware (2.09) as you suggested I tried to find a way to use the Philips as an “ethernet” router (disabling the ADSL port),
I was surprised to find a lot of people trying to do the same with their Philips in Belgium (Belgacom->VOO exodus?!), but nobody reported a working configuration. After trying a lot of configurations (I’m not an network expert but I understand the TCP/IP mechanics) the farest I went was to configure the Philips to eventually connect to the Internet (not able to route extra hosts thou!!!).
If somebody is interested, the trick consists in – on the Philips – disabling the ADSL (you can also use a VCL 1483 Bridge), disabling the DHCP, using a PC to “clone” the Philips MAC and then use the IP assigned by the DHCP of the VOO modem, just put the PC IP on the Philips and you are done!, do not forget to “unclone” the PC’s MAC! (the main problem was that the Philips LAN cannot work as a DHCP Client). Just add the correct routes and DNS (on the WAN) and your ROUTER is able to reach any internet host.
The previous setup works fine as long as you dont turn off the router or the VOO, it worked fine for a while in my case and then I got an instable behavior (I suppose due to the VOO dhcp stuff).
Finally I fed up (too much hassle to repeat the previous procedure each time a disconnection happens, also I don’t know the exact policies of VOO’s DHCP), and I got a second hand DLINK DI-524 for 20€, I updated the firmware (BTW, the DI-524′s 2008 firmware SUCKS just update to the 2009 (Beta) if you want STABLE wifi connections on your Laptop, Android or IPhone).
Although my current setup is working fine I was willing to use the Philips in my setup (i.e. as a network USB Disk, voip phone, etc.) So I just configured the Philips’ Lan with a compatible IP (same network as the DLINK), the DNS, disable the Wireless, disable the ADSL and also disabled the DHCP. Until this point my Philips is working fine
(reaching/pinging any host on the internet).
This is the network layout I’m using:
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2584/rksetup.png
Althouth the network USB HDD (SAMBA Share) works like a charm!, the VOIP client is not working correctly, here’s my setup:
- Using an account on 12voip.com
- The “VOIP Status” on the Philips Web Admin indicates the VOIP connections is ok (reports “Success”), so I suppose I’m correctly registered on the VOIP provider,
- I’m using an old (2000′s) Siemens Telephone model 2010 connect to the ATA,
- I followed the instructions on 12VOIP for this exact model (http://www.12voip.com/en/sipp.html)
- However, each time I want to make a call I got a busy tone, no matter which number.
Do you have any idea of what could be wrong? Any tips/experience connecting to commercial SIP providers? Is there any trick to dial? (i.e. do you need to send a # before the real number?). Any help is welcome.
Finally, my advice to everyone who has a Philips 6520: DO NOT DISCARD your PHILIPS, it has outstanding features like: 2 Voip Clients, Network HDD, and the possibility to extend your wireless range (WDS)?
Thanks and Regards from Nivelles, Belgium
Sébastien Wains
Hi,
Thanks for your feedback.
I’m using rynga.com and poivy.com. I’m registering to those with Asterisk PBX and don’t face the busy tone problem.
Make sure you use a compatible codec ? I’m using g729, and used to use g711a when my PBX was not speedy enough to process audio encoding/decoding.
By the way, dialing through those providers (betamax) should be in this scheme : 0033612345678 if you want to call a cell phone in France for example.

Seb

Sébastian,
Salut!. I finally got my setup working (it was my fault, typo on the login/passwd, shame on me), I confirm 12voip is working fine and I’m able to make calls from the setup detailed in the previous post. My Philips 6520 (a.k.a. BELGACOM Router/Modem) works like a charm and has a second life now as a softphone/network HDD! The 6520 save me to buy a new VOIP phone (50-70€) for sure. I also took the opportunity to test 12voip (BETAMAX) with Sipdroid for the Android using the same config and “ça marche nickel” (works great) as the belgians say.
Regards,
Javier

I use SipAgent on my Android phone, lower delays compared to Sipdroid..

Bonjour,
Voilà, j’ai tout bien configuré.
ADSL skynet OK.
Belgacom TV OK.

http://nl.wiki.edpnet.be/index.php/Instellingen
M.V.g,
Cé

Hello,
I’ve read the majority of the previous comments and I could not find the answer to the following questions.
I would like to know if anybody has succeeded with the firmware update mentioned in this post on the Philips CIA6720NB/18 model. Do you know if there is any Belgacom adsl modem which allows by default alternative VOIP provider connections? I have the CIA6720NB/18 modem and I cannot make it work with my voip account(12voip.com).
Thanks for the info
deeler
I was wondering, is this modem (with the SMC firmware) capable of ADSL2(+) ????
can someone confirm the link speeds ?
mine is (through telnet):
